Radiation is a fascinating as it is scary.

A bit late to this, but only 31 people died in the actual event of chernobyl (though the UN claims it was 50.)

The number 600,000 people comes from the liquidators who helped in the cleanup afterwards, which was all via prolonged exposure secondhandedly to the actual catastrophic event. It is also written that "Psychological trauma from Chernobyl remains widespread and profound resulting in “"suicides, drinking problems and apathy."" which I assume has also contributed to this number.

Though it is very tragic, I write this to distinguish facts from glazed estimations. The misfortune of this event is oftentimes weaponised into hysteria for motives other than the reasonable sadness it deserves.

Nevertheless, F in chat for everyone who was involved in this; Men, women, children, the named and the nameless. The numbers could have been much worse if not for them.

I swear I was scrolling they yet at night and I came upon this video thumbnail and I swear I commed so hard there was a permanent dent in the toilet

You don’t need to exaggerated the horror of Chernobyl with monsters because the radiation and what almost happened provides more than enough terror and suspense, knowing that real people had to go into here just in the hopes of preventing MILLIONS of people from getting effected by the fallout of Chernobyl if they failed is a mountable off pressure and tension. I had just heard about the liquidators that had to go into the tanks to drain the water and even then I didn’t know that they might’ve had an encounter with the Elephants Foot(which to this day is still the most deadly thing on the planet and they are STILL working around the clock on ensuring it’s containment), it’s just all so crazy and terrifying because the elephants foot is still hot now and can still kill you but when it was first forming it was even worse(people literally couldn’t be in the same room as it to film it they had to use a mirror around a corner to get footage of it and even then you can see in the footage that been even that close to it was already damaging the footage). Just the sight of that deadly mass as it was forming got me so worried thinking that “oh shit, is there gonna be a valve in that room?!?” But then I had to reassure myself that no there couldn’t be because all 3 of the tank liquidators lives for good long while after this(1 died at 64 and I believe the other 2 are still alive to this day), but just the dread of how close they had to get to that thing just to get to a valve is better then any horror movie I’ve seen. It’s the invisible unseen monster that is radiation that gets you and that’s what makes Chernobyl so terrifying, I wish more horror media tried this type of horror, the invisible unseen kind, the thing that’s slowly killing you and those who might be around you or come into contact of you, it almost feels eldritch in the unknown of it all, except we know exactly what it is, it’s just the characters in the story don’t know(like the majority of the Chernobyl liquidators were not given the full knowledge of how deadly and dangerous what they were doing is)

my science class watched a bunch of documentaries about Chernobyl they had images of actual survivors, the hospitals, footage of people dying/killing themselves and I have never been more afraid in my life. I had also watched a documentary on 9/11 again with footage of people dying/killing themselves, the over packed hospitals, the firefighters all of it. these events are so horribly crude and inhumane, it baffles me to this day that these even happened
