A good tank is an integral part of most RPG parties. Mages, rogues, and healers are important for killing enemies and supporting their teammates, but none of their abilities mean much if they get downed before they can use them. A tank is the shield that keeps the rest of the party alive.
Izelair Wigan is one of The DioField Chronicle’s starting tanks, and what she lacks in mobility she more than makes up for with incredible resistances and survivability that keep her in the fight long after others would have gone down. Several good builds are possible with Izelair, but some compliment her unique strengths more than others. Here’s everything the player needs to know about what abilities to upgrade first.
As one of the two starting tanks in The DioField Chronicle, Izelair Wigan will understandably be compared to Fredret Lester. Whereas Fredret boasts higher mobility, Izelair is better for pulling and holding aggro. She also has a higher survivability than Fredret, which is absolutely something that players should lean into when deciding on the best early upgrades to spend their AP on.
Her early abilities are Strong Constitution, which increases the effectiveness of healing, and Status Effect Evasion, which increasing the likelihood of protecting Izelair from negative Status Effects. When deciding which abilities are most important to upgrade early on, it’s important to consider the character’s equipment. Izelair is strongest when used with the Knight’s Sword. Though it lacks the damage buff offered by other items, it grants Izelair a substantial increase to HP. This HP bump makes Izelair’s abilities even more effective than they would otherwise be.
Status Effect Evasion is an incredibly important ability for Izelair and should be upgraded the earliest opportunity. Though preventing negative Status Effects is important for any character, it is far more important for a tank like Izelair. If she is rendered inoperable by a Stun, her ability to draw aggro and defend her teammates is eliminated. Status Effect Evasion helps make sure that doesn’t happen. Once Izelair unlocks Strength in Numbers and Knight’s Wisdom, she will become even harder to stop.
Getting SP and skills is a big part of The DioField Chronicle. Izelair’s Shield Bash skill is an integral part of tanking with the character. This skill damages an enemy while also inflicting Stun. The damage is of secondary importance to the Stun effect, as Stunning prevents the enemy from using their own lethal skills against the player’s other characters. Used in conjunction with Strong Constitution and Status Effect Evasion, Shield Bash maximizes the player’s chances to disrupt enemy attacks while ensuring that Izelair remains standing to tank for the player’s more vulnerable characters.
Though Status Effect Evasion should be the player’s priority when upgrading, Strong Constitution shouldn’t be far behind, especially considering how well it pairs with another of Izelair’s skills. Roundhouse Clash deals AoE damage and inflicts Provoke, keeping aggro on Izelair. Though there are situations in which Fredret’s mobility and other unique qualities make him the superior tank, Izelair’s ability to hold enemy attention on herself, take hits, shrug off Status Effects, and survive long enough to heal make her a uniquely qualified tank throughout one’s playthrough.
The DioField Chronicle is available for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
